This two and half hour seminar outlining an inclusive approach to design examined the following topics:
- why embedding inclusive design is important in the face of an ageing population which is living longer, but with more years in poor health
- generational differences and impairments that architects should consider to enable good lives, instead of creating barriers
- challenges and opportunities of adapting an ageing housing stock
- the social value of inclusive design and the responsibility written into the RIBA code of conduct
- Equality Act (2010), Part M and other design standards
- healthy places make healthy people by promoting physical activity and social cohesion
- Active by Design programme by the Design Council
- role of flexible, adaptable homes with a range of sizes and tenures offered for multi-generational communities
- technical aspects of designing for health including ventilation, lighting and security
