Design and Architecture for better Health and Wellbeing
Tuesday 17th September:
- Meredith Bowles, Mole Architects – co-housing, Marmalade Lane
- Lynne Clapham-Carter, Geberit – sensory bathrooms
- Gareth Lewis, Kerakoll – green building materials
- Mark Elmore, Fisher & Paykel – social kitchens
- Oliver Heath, Oliver Heath Design – biophilic design
A thought-provoking morning of talks ranging from specific appliances and fittings to new construction materials to architecture and interior design, with the common thread being health and well-being. It was particularly interesting to hear from Meredith Bowles about the design process and success of Marmalade Lane in housing an intentional community. Oliver Heath’s talk on biophilia touched on the WELL standard, Kaplan & Kaplan’s Savannah hypothesis and the 14 patterns of biophilic design. The business case behind pursuing biophilic design and the use of biophilia to nurture socialising and a sense of community were of particular note.
