Exhibition: Modernism in Britain 1933–66 – Wednesday 30th October
Charting the influence of the Bauhaus in Britain, this exhibition includes key modernist precedents which have greatly informed this project. The social purpose embedded within the school is reflected in the following schemes.
Gropius devised a scheme of functional beauty set into the landscape, with a classroom layout that maximised daylight throughout and gave the children direct access to nature, whilst the facades anticipate the language of many public buildings built during the 1950’s.

Lyon’s Span housing programme, built at sites across the south of England, is the most immediate representation of Gropius’ philosophy for housing Britain, offering open yet highly dense estates set into landscaped, communal gardens.
