The primary purpose of this trip was to gain a richer understanding of another key, contemporary case study of supportive healthcare environments: REHAB Basel, designed by Herzog de Meuron.
This neurorehabilitation centre cares for long-term in-patients, out-patients on day visits and those requiring emergency appointments. I hoped to learn how the varied programme of therapies, clinical practices and residential patients are housed within a building which recognises the vital role of nature in healing and well-being.
It became clear that providing visual and physical links to nature was a priority, as was creating the most supportive and calming environment for patients with accessibility embodied throughout – working through the design, not despite it. Wednesday 11th September.
