King’s Hedge’s Community

Meeting community groups and council-run community centres in King’s Hedges:

  • Thursday 20th June: North Cambridge Community Partnership AGM
  • Tuesday 25th June: Buchan Street Neighbourhood Centre
  • Thursday 28th June: Crochet Ladies and Lego Club, NCCP

This week I continued to speak with local residents and community organisations in north-east Cambridge to better understand everyday life, the most pressing concerns and community convergence in this area.

The Buchan Street Neighbourhood Centre is located near to two other community centres: the Meadows Centre and a new centre in the Orchard Park development. This proximity, and the council’s need to build more affordable homes, places BSNC at the centre of plans to build a new ‘hub’ at the Meadows site, consolidating these two facilities, so that BSNC can be replaced with council homes. The existing Meadows Centre would remain open until the new hub is built on adjacent land, before the original centre is replaced with more council homes.

I spoke to a crochet group about the community centre at 37 Lawrence Way, how the area has changed and the importance to them of having a space to meet locally. Afterwards I documented the route from this site, arguably in the heart of King’s Hedges, to the Science Park. This connection exists but is not seamless or always easy to navigate.
